Grant PUD was built by a community of forward thinkers. Residents formed this PUD to bring electricity to the county in the 1930s. In the 1950s, they encouraged construction of two dams on the Columbia River to provide renewable, low-cost power for themselves and future generations. Grant County is a rural, predominantly agricultural region. Local ownership and control of power resources has helped the county grow and prosper. Our low-cost power has allowed the county to attract new businesses and create more jobs to help drive our regional and state economies. Grant PUD operates two Columbia River dams and two smaller hydro generators. We also have a share of the Nine Canyon Wind Project. These resources have the collective capacity to power a city the size of Seattle. We sell a portion of this power to the region via the wholesale market.
An important element of any thriving community is power. The two dams in the area date to the late 1950's when this dam was built. It 1970, the dam allowed for the development of the community of Desert Aire. A refurbishing project is currently underway.
