For years, the Vernita Bridge Water Access Area has been a cherished part of the fall fishing tradition for many residents of Washington and neighboring states. The Hanford Reach fall Chinook fishing season attracts numerous anglers, many of whom use the Vernita site on the Columbia River as their base, launching their boats and setting up camp. The site, managed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) under a permit from the Department of Energy (DOE), has transformed into a small, bustling community each fall.

Despite being designated as a day-use site, Vernita has seen an increasing number of campers setting up trailers and motorhomes for extended stays since the late 1990s. This has led to the area becoming a hotspot for fishing guides and enthusiasts who often stay for the entire season.
